Advertise Web Sites for Free

Once you’ve created a web site, you need to advertise it online. Here are some free advertising tips to get you started…

  • The first and most obvious way to advertise is to get the word out to everyone that you personally know. Make a list of everyone you can think of including your friends, family, hairdresser, grocer, mailman, dentist, etc…everyone!
  • Make some business cards up with your web site on it and give them out. If you have their email address, you could send them a quick note saying hi and letting them know about your new site. They might not need what you have to offer, but someone they know might. The point is…make yourself visible!
  • Becoming a part of an active forum online is a great place to advertise your web site. Most forums allow you to put your web site address in the signature profile that shows up after you make a post. It’s always a good idea to become an active user first and contribute something of value to the forum. After a few posts, add your web site address to the signature.
  • Find forums that would have an interest in what you are promoting on your web site. To locate a forum, you can type the subject of your website and then the word forum into the search box on Google or yahoo.
  • Forums that would relate to your site will show up in the results. If you’ve never used a forum before just pick one and sign up. No better time than now to learn!
  • Submit your site to the search engines. It can be time consuming and take several weeks to get listed, but it is a free way to get exposure for your site. The three main search engines are Google, MSN, and Yahoo. For Google, just go to their main site and click on about Google. You’ll see a place for site owners to submit their web site url. Yahoo and MSN will have similar places for you to submit your site.

Affiliate Products to Promote

If you’re not making good money with your affiliate marketing campaigns then you’re not doing some things right. One the things you might be doing wrong is promoting bad products. If you promote products that do not sell well, you don’t have a chance of succeeding with it no matter how much you pre-sell or how much traffic you send there.

Picking a winning product is a critical factor of success with affiliate marketing. If you pick a winning product, half of the job is done already. All you need to do is send targeted traffic to your offer and watch your commissions soar.

Picking a winning product is however a problem for many affiliate marketers. They pick products to promote just because some people they know are promoting it. They don’t do their own due diligence. If you’re about to start your own affiliate marketing campaign, here are some tips you should follow when picking the products you want to promote.

  • Does the sales page make you want to buy? I suggest you visit the site you want to promote with the mind set of a buyer. Read through the sales letter like you want to buy. Then ask yourself. Does the sales page/process make you want to bring out your credit card to order? If it does not make you want to buy, then don’t promote it. If it doesn’t make you want to buy, then it won’t make many others out there buy?
  • How good is the product? A lot of affiliates don’t care about this. It’s very important to use the the product you are promoting. If you buy it and use it, you will be in a better position to talk about how good it is. You will be able to pre-sell better and honestly answer the questions you will be asked about it.
  • Does it have a back end? Many products just do a straight sale and that is it. Don’t promote such products. Promote products that have a back end offer. This will ensure maximum commissions per sale. That is another reason why it’s good to buy the product you want to promote. You will be able to see how strong the back end offer is.

These tips will surely help you in picking quality products that will surely increase your commissions. I wish you all the best.

Take Advantage of Free Website Promotion

A few years back a number of experts were predicting the end of free website promotion. The thinking went since the major conglomerates were starting to utilize the internet more and more, it would eventually drive up the price on just about every aspect of online business including advertising. This would put a lot of pressure on small and home based online businesses that had benefited from the early days of website promotion when costs were free or very affordable and competition was not as widespread.

The good news is free website promotion never went anywhere. It has continued to grow and evolve just like the internet. Maybe the boom years of website promotion don’t exist anymore due to the number of websites online but in some ways its better than before. Constant growth means more people online to view your information or product. Here are a few tips to getting the most out of free website promotion:

  • The Directories. This could be the easiest way to generate free website promotion. Just create a profile of your website including a good description along with the right targeted keywords and begin submitting your site to the many online web directories. This as you may have gathered will not generate traffic to your site overnight. However over time it will lay the groundwork for more backlinks to your site which can greatly improve your website’s search engine ranking and link popularity. Start out by submitting your site to at least five directories per day.
  • The Forums. It’s almost as if forums were built for free website promotion. Just register with the forum of your choosing, create a signature file (also known as a resource box) and start advertising. One important element to remember: To make forum advertising truly work, you must become an active participant in that community. Do not just post your latest product or service. Instead make a deliberate and constant effort to provide good information, opinion and discussion to the forum. Once people in the forum become more familiar with you, your website promotion becomes easier.
  • Courtesy. This applies not only to the forums but anywhere else you do business online. No doubt you’ve witnessed how aggressive and insulting people can be in cyberspace. There is something about posting anonymously or at least from an “undisclosed” location that brings out the antagonism in some people. A little bit of politeness and respect can greatly assist you in establishing contacts with other webmasters. This will make them more open to exchanging links with you. They may also check out your website and promote your product or service to their readers and subscribers without requesting anything in return. That’s the power of common courtesy.
  • Video. About three years ago, internet marketing pioneer and businessman Kevin McCarthy predicted that video would transform the internet. Today we are looking at the dawning of the video online revolution. What this means is free website promotion has gone to the next level. Just use a web cam or any other recording equipment to make your video and then easily upload it to the hundreds (and growing) of video sharing sites like of course YouTube and BlipTV. Video can place your website promotion in front of new customers who normally would not be interested in your product or service.

The Internet continues to grow and change rapidly. The predicted collapse of small businesses online due to the demise of free website promotion never happened. Instead not only are the free tools that were available still around (and very effective) but new website promotion tools have been added. Take advantage of the directories, video, forums and just good old fashion common courtesy to boost your free website promotion campaigns.

Barriers to Affiliate Marketing Success

Affiliate marketing is a really good way to start to learn how to run an internet business. You get to start your own business without the headache of a conventional business like credit card processing, shipping, creating your own products and getting a copywriter to create a sales page for you.

However, most people do not achieve much success using this model. In this article I would like to go over the most common mistakes that people make that prevents them from achieving a decent level of success.

  • Build your own list. This is one of the biggest mistakes that most internet marketers make. They do not build their own list. If I had done this when I first started marketing online I would have been a lot of further than what I currently am. You can earn much more money from a huge list than what your web site ever can by itself. If you send a visitor to a sales page then it will be very unlikely that they will ever return to your web site again. If you have your own email list then you can market over and over again to your prospects.
  • Focus on a project until it is successful. I remember when I first started online I was in such a hurry to complete a project and then move on. Unfortunately, I did not maximize my efforts by getting the most of the projects that I worked on. This is a very common mistake.
  • Start with free advertising. It is very important to first create your marketing system using free advertising like forum postings and article marketing. Once you have have a system in place that is tweaked for maximum return on investment you can start paid advertising and know exactly how much you will earn for every hundred visitors that you send to your web site.
  • Choose affiliate products that have a good sales page. One of the big mistakes that I made when I first started out was I promoted affiliate products with terrible sales page. Now I can immediately see if a sales page will convert and only select good quality products that have very good sales pages.

Ten Ways to Generate Website Traffic

There are many different ways to drive traffic to your websites. This article will cover the ten primary methods of traffic generation that most people use to drive visitors to their websites. A note about traffic generation — you do not have to use all ten methods to drive traffic to your site. Many people find that it is best to concentrate their efforts on 2-3 methods and become proficient and consistent in their efforts with those techniques. Oftentimes, if you spread yourself too thin using too many methods, you will find that you are unable to maintain the consistency of effort necessary to succeed. Therefore, find the methods that work best for you and master those before moving on to other methods.

Search Engine Traffic (SEO)

Search Engine Traffic is any traffic sent to you by search engines such as Google and Yahoo. Visitors are directed to your site based on the search engine’s result set for a keyword or keywords. This type of traffic is great, if you can get your website high in search engine rankings. Search Engine traffic takes time and effort to develop, and requires both on and off-page optimization techniques (which are outlined in this blog.). If you are attracted to this method of traffic generation, realize that it can potentially take months of effort on your part to achieve a high ranking on Google and Yahoo, and then then there’s no guarantee of success. But, if you can get the coveted #1 listing for your keywords on Google or Yahoo, you will certainly see a lot of traffic.

PPC Advertising

PPC advertising is ideal if you want to drive traffic to your site very quickly and don’t mind paying for it. If you do use PPC advertising, making sure you have some method of capturing the prospect’s contact info (name, email) to make the most of this traffic. Remember, once your ad campaign stops, so does all the traffic.

Article Marketing

Article Marketing is a great technique to use to build traffic to your site, increase your search engine ranking, and establish yourself as an expert. See my earlier post about article marketing for more details. Article marketing is something you’ll want to establish as as long-term strategy - traffic will grow over time and number of articles published, so you must be diligent. It is recommended that you publish at least one article per day consistently over several months if you want to see real, long-lasting results from this technique.

Press Releases

Press releases are a little-known and incredibly powerful method of marketing your products and services. Want to get noticed by 10,000 people minimum overnight? Put out a press release. Ever notice that on a Google result set, press releases are listed above the first result on a search? That’s the power of press releases. The key with press releases is to make them news and not marketings peak. For example, a press release about how great your product is would not acceptable, but a PR about your charitable contributions, or an independent survey done by your company confirming an authority source on some important issue in your niche would be.

Link Building

Link building involves contacting other websites that are complementary to yours and getting them to link to you. You’ll effectively ’steal’ some traffic from their site, and you’ll increase your own Google PR. Link building has always been a traditional backbone of traffic generation, but has been overshadowed in popularity by other techniques. Again, this is a long-term strategy, and you must be consistent in your efforts if you are to be successful with this method.

Blogs

Blogs are a great way to generate traffic to your website. By establishing yourself as an expert in your field and giving your product a personal front (you), you are helping your customers feel comfortable about buying from you, and creating a fantastic venue from which to drive traffic to anywhere you want. Alternatively, posting intelligent commentary to a posting of the blog of an expert in your field is also a good way to generate. Make sure that your comment is relevant and useful - don’t just spam a link to your site in your comments or you’re likely to get deleted.

Videos

Videos are an incredibly powerful way to drive traffic and grab attention for your products or services — just look at the success of YouTube. You can get literally tens of thousands of people looking at your videos within a day of your posting them on YouTube - more if your videos go Viral.

Forums

The Forum model is much like posting comments to blogs. The idea is to post a link to your site in a forum posting or reply, but you have to make sure that your post is relevant or useful, or your post will be deleted and you bill be banned from the forum. So, the best forum strategy is to invest some time in establishing yourself as a forum expert before you start adding links to your site in your posts. It will be much harder for forum administrators to kick you if you are an established and contributing member of their community.

Paid Links / Ads

Paid links on high PR authority sites in your niche are also a great way to drive traffic to your website. They will give you direct traffic to your site, as well as raise your Google search traffic due to increased relevance of your website for your keywords because of a one-way link from a high PR site.

Social Networking / Web 2.0

Social Networks are currently one of the hottest ways of generating massive traffic to your websites. With some intelligent manipulation of profile pages of MySpace, Squidoo, FaceBook, and others, I’ve seen friends not only get on page one of Google for their keywords in a day, but also get several different entries listed on the Google results! Used intelligently, social networks can drive massive traffic to your websites.

How to Make Money from Your Blog

In Internet Marketing, blogging is another way to make money online. There are many bloggers who make a comfortable living from blogging. Many of them only spend a few hours a day working on this model, and easily earn 3-4 figures a month. If you were to study their methods and put them into practise, you will discover that making money from blogging is really very simple and straightforward.

There are many ways you can make money from a blog. Many of them do not require any capital outlay from yourself, and they offer a powerful passive income source. What is even more attractive is that you can have multiple income sources built into your blog. All you need to do is to create traffic and readership, and a small conversion rate will build that income. So how can you make money from your blog?

  • Affiliate programs. One common way is to review and promote affiliate programs. Many blogs make the mistake of just advertising the programs. To increase conversion, you should review these programs to create trust and credibility. Research has shown that word-of-mouth marketing converts better than direct advertising. Visitors want social proof that someone has used the program and benefited before they would buy.
  • Sell advertising space. Your blog is your piece of virtual estate. There is a lot of space available on which you can sell advertisements such as banners and text links, to merchants, affiliates or bloggers who wish to promote their products. As your blog becomes increasingly popular, your blog advertising space will also increase in value.
  • Using contextual advertising networks. If you have not heard of Adsense, you are missing out on a potentially profitable blog income source. Many bloggers make a living on Adsense alone. While I would not recommend that you depend totally on one source of income, contextual advertising networks such as Adsense and Kontera can contribute greatly to your online money making efforts. These networks would provide relevant ads on your blog, and you will earn money when people click on those ads.
  • Paid reviews. Another way for merchants or sites to promote their business is through reviews. You can write reviews for them, post them on your blog, and get paid for doing so. There are already many such paid review networks such as ReviewMe.com and PayPerPost.com, although qualifying for them would require that you have spent some time blogging. This is to ensure that you can consistently provide value to their advertisers and be in it for the long haul. If you are serious about making money blogging, this should not be an issue.

These are just four of the most common methods to earn a blog income. If you only spend a few hours a day building your blog with these methods, it will not be long before you join the ranks of bloggers who earn a living blogging.

Building Sub-Lists to Maximize Profit

Every successful online marketer has an opt-in mailing list. Most of us began our list building efforts by using a free gift to entice prospects to subscribe but this is only the beginning of a profitable list building strategy.

Once you have a list of some size, it’s a great idea to start building sub-lists from your current subscriber base to help you really target your promotions and increase your profits. This is a simple matter of segmenting your subscribers into smaller lists based on their interests and actions.

For example, everyone should definitely have a buyers list. You can create this sub-list by simply having your subscribers fill out a form with name and email after they purchase one of your offers. Or you can have a programmer set up an IPN script on your payment processor that adds a buyer’s name and payment address to an autoresponder database after each purchase.

By doing this you will have a mailing list made up only of your paying customers. These are people who have an interest in your wares and the ability to pay for them, so I’m sure you see the value in building such a sub-list. This database will become one of your most profitable assets.

Or let’s say you interview an expert in your field via telephone and invite your subscribers to sit in on the call. This is a fairly common marketing tactic that can result in some nice affiliate sales. You could ask your subscribers to register for the call by filling out an opt-in form. This is an easy way to create a sub-list of readers who have an expressed interest in products offered by the person you are interviewing, and you could increase revenue by targeting these people with pitches specific to such products.

The idea behind sub-list building is just to organize your subscribers into smaller groups, all with a very specific interest or promotional value. Of course you’ll still have your main list to “fall back on” so you only stand to gain by applying this strategy to your own marketing efforts.

Is Blogging Ruining Your Online Business?

Blogging is “hot” right? And yet there are so many online businesses today being ruined because of the blog. Whatever article you read, whichever website or forum you visit, you will read or hear about the benefits of setting up a blog and its advantages over using traditional static websites. And, I gotta tell you, “I’m one of those proponents!”

But what I see all too often is bloggers sabotaging their online business because of their mindset about blogs and blogging. You see, I believe there is a general consensus amongst marketers new to the Internet that if something is inexpensive, if something is said to be easier, then it means that it doesn’t have to be “worked.” And then the other side of the coin is that if “I have paid thousands of dollars to get my site built then the “workings” are surely included!”

So whether people have gone through the process of setting up a simple blog or spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars to have an all singing and all dancing blog built for them, they then feel they can do very little to market it, only to be surprised and disappointed later on that no one is visiting their blog, no one is signing up to their newsletter or blog updates and certainly no one is buying their products and services or clicking their AdSense ads.

But it’s not all doom and gloom … The great thing about blog marketing is that by mixing some solid business principles with a few marketing strategies, you can get back on track to get more traffic, build your list, sell more products and attract more clients and, this can all happen in a relatively short period of time.

Here is one principle and three simple strategies that you can apply to your blog marketing and promotion efforts today that will start bringing you traffic and building your readership in a matter of weeks, if not days… First, here is the principle: “You Have to Start Thinking of Building an Online Business and Not of Building a Blog.”

If you think in terms of building a blog, this is where you’ll stop. If you think of building a business, you’ll be attracted to business ideas that will help you promote and market your blog and, attract the RIGHT kind of clients. What you want to avoid is falling into the trap of creating “form over substance.” In other words, the strategies you apply, must be grounded and backed up by principles and, Ralph Waldo Emerson, the writer, said that if you try to apply methods but ignore principles, you are sure to have trouble. So with that basic principle of “thinking” business building, let me cover three strategies that will help endorse the principle so you start making money with your blog:

1. Theme your blog. You cannot be all things to all people since you’ll end up serving no one. So the first thing you need to do, is decide “what” your blog is going to be about, “who” it will help and, ask yourself “why” people need your information. This will help you narrow your niche before you even start spending your precious time on writing elevator speeches and thinking of the perfect strap line. What you now need to do is go into the admin area of you blog and, since I use WordPress, I will use this as an example … you need to ensure that both the “Weblog Title” and the “Tagline” of your blog reflect what your blog is about.

And ensure they BOTH include your site’s overall keyword or key phrase. So, if your blog is about Dog Training, but your domain name is CruftsRUs.com (a made up name), instead of using the domain name in your blog title as so many bloggers do, you could write “Dog Training With Crufts” or something creative that grabs the eye of your human readers but also attracts the search engine spiders. Now, when the search engines come to crawl your blog, this is the first thing they will see … a title that reflects the keywords or phrase that people are searching for online.

2. Write regular “quality” blog posts and ensure you’ve activated your Pinging or Update Services in your blog admin area. This is where many bloggers trip up. They want a blog, but only want to add a blog post every two months because they just don’t have time to blog … and believe me, I’ve fallen into the same trap. But if you understand how blogs work, I think it will help you understand just how important it is to update your blog on a regular basis. For a quick overview on how blogs work, you can go to my article entitled How Blogs Work. In my view, if you don’t have time to blog - especially if your blog is your main marketing tool - what you are essentially saying is that you don’t have time to build your business.

3. Comment on other people’s blogs. It takes just a few minutes to make a comment on other people’s blog posts, but ensure you write something of value and not just “great article … thanks!” If you write something of value, you will get people clicking on the link that will take them to your blog and, in some instances you’ll get backlinks to your blog which, Google loves. And you never know, you may even gain some new clients from this relatively simple exercise.

By implementing these simple strategies and, thinking in terms of business building you no longer have to let your blog ruin your online business. You’ll also notice a significant difference in your blog traffic over days, weeks and months which will then put you in the advantageous position of being able to monetize your blog traffic.

Growing Your Mailing List

In a previous article, I mentioned that your internal house list will give you the best return on your marketing. But what do you do if you don’t have your own list? You’ll have to build one. Here are seven ways to build your own list.

  1. Post comments on appropriate blogs and Web sites with a link back to your site.
  2. Add a forwarding call to action to the customer emails you already send out. For example, “Did a friend send this to you? Claim your own copy here (it’s free).” Or, “Know someone else who would like this newsletter? (Use this link to send it).”
  3. Put a sign-up box (just name and email) at the top of your home page. ( Offer a special report or newsletter sample.
  4. If you’re not doing so already, advertise in complementary (newsletters that also reach your target market (you may even be able to (barter), if you have your own newsletter.
  5. Send out a postcard or other low-cost mailing to a rented list to generate leads. Don’t try to make an immediate sale, just offer something that the recipients will find appealing and ask them to contact you to get it.
  6. Write articles for ezinearticles, other Web sites, magazines, etc. that appeal to your target audience.
  7. Offer a free download or report of some kind that your market will want. If you offer investment advice, write a report on “10 Best Long-Term Investments”. Ask your visitors to fill out a short form in order to get the report.
